May 2017: President’s Note

Where did the month of April go?!

Hopefully, we are done seeing the white stuff for awhile. My mom was born and raised in Alton, Illinois, and strongly disliked the climate in Duluth/Superior. She once told me that she’d heard from a Twin Ports native that there was record of snow falling every month of the year but one. Hmmmm….August perhaps? I too, have a hard time with the length of our winters here, however overall love and embrace this natural-ly beautiful area in which we live.

Turning the page to May, the DSTA is on the brink of some big events! Our May gathering will feature information on area parks and trails, and will be held at Vintage Italian Pizza. Please ensure that you sign up for what promises to be a very informative meeting.

The Fill-a-Truck, Feed-a-Family Food Drive is right around the corner (June 2nd & 3rd), and a large number of volunteers are needed to help make this event a successful one. Last year, approximately 9,000 pounds of food (18 pal-lets) and $5,600 in cash were collected. Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 and collect as much food as possible, shooting for 10,000 pounds of food (20 pallets). The money and food collected helps to feed thousands of less fortunate Northlanders. Please ask your fam-ily and friends to lend a hand as well.

Please email Jay Baker, at jbaker@slidingsystems.com to sign up. Please include your name, phone number, and t-shirt size, as well as the time and location you will volunteer at. We are also seeking corporate volunteers. Businesses that commit to 30 total hours of volunteering will qualify for corporate sponsorship, and will have their business logo incorporated onto large banners that are prominently displayed at the collection sites, as well as on t-shirts and in event advertising. The deadline to sign-up as a corporate sponsor is noon on Monday, May 15th. Once again, I can’t stress enough how much we need your help. Please sign up, today!
In closing, please be on the lookout for updates from the DSTA scholarship committee, details regarding our annual golf outing on July 19th, and information about our Sundew Family Fun Fest on August 16th.

Take care, enjoy the splendor of May, and hope to see you on the 17th!
Until next month,
Leyla Aktekin
DSTA President
